Newb Questions for getting Q3/ioQuake setup and running on a game server

Hello!

Please pardon the noob question…

I would like to setup Quake 3 on a rented Q3 server using ioQuake, but I’m not even sure if that’s possible. My basic plan:

  • Buy Quake 3 on Steam for my friends and I
  • Rent a Quake 3 server from GameServers.com
  • Use ioQuake to run Quake 3 on Windows 10 PCs
  • Use old bot skins & hi-res pack

Will that work?

Do I have to do anything special to get ioQuake working with a rented game server?

that all should work, I don’t know what kind of access gameservers.com gives you to run custom code, however we do have instructionds for setting up a game server here: http://wiki.ioquake3.org/Sys_Admin_Guide
those are most useful for doing so on a VPS from linode, digital ocean, or another provider.

Thanks TimeDoctor. Alas, however, that SysAdmin guide has no instructions for running a server on Windows, which is all I have access to. I will ask gamerservers.com if they can run ioquake. Should have thought of that first. Thanks!
