About making skins for models

Hi. I was thinking about trying to do some reskins, but i didn’t have any experience of skinning for old games mostly, with oldschool way of “here is UV-ready texture, so it looks like it was sliced up and rearranged to fit into 256x256 square, good luck photoshopping”. HOWEVER, i’d like to ask if it’s possible to make a skin using “modern way” (what people do in 3D Coat, Substance Painter, Zbrush etc.) aka loading fullmodel, and painting over it in realtime, and then exporting materials.

Anyone thought of this? Could it be possible that we can export all main playermodels as one model with textures , paint what we need over them, and then export back textures into md3… WHILE having same UV things so it’s compatible.

I haven’t used any software for painting textures directly on models but I don’t see why it couldn’t be done. It’s a good idea really.
