Mac OS 9 client connecting to ioquake server

A 25 year old iMac is my latest stupid project. Yes, it runs quake3.

As far as I can tell, though, the newest quake3 that runs on Mac OS 9 is 1.30. This is protocol version 66, which is, of course, unsupported.

I have a small, entirely unfounded hope that I can get this old quake3 client to talk to my ioquake3 server… even if it’s a “change the protocol number and hope it works” situation.

I stumbled across com_legacyprotocol which I assume doesn’t do what I hope it does - but regardless, I can’t work out how to set it. When I try and set it at the console I’m told it’s write protected.

Please tell me this is all a bad idea and/or proven impossible so I don’t go much further down this rabbit hole.

The iMac g3 was my first ever Mac, so I wish you all the luck with this one! Legacy protocol and some of your other questions may be answered on our sys admin guide here:
