Quake 3 Team Arena - Cannot Join SinglePlayer

For Quake III Team Arena, I cannot seem to join a single player game. What happens is that when I start a singleplayer match from the mode “SinglePlayer,” the game kicks me into spectator mode as soon as the pre-fight starts and the “Join” function (via ESC > Join) is grayed out. As far as I can tell, the game is supposed to immediately place the player as a combatant, instead of forcing them to join as a spectator in “SinglePlayer” mode. However, I can create my own server and it seems to work fine via the “StartServer” menu option.

I installed the regular stable build from the ioquake website, then I installed the test build (both x86 and x86_64 Windows) from July 25, 2015. Both of these test builds suffer from the same issue. I have ensured the md5 sums of all of the pk3 files in both the baseq3 and missionpack folders are proper as according to this post. I have cleared out my Quake 3 user files (located at C:/Users//Appdata/Roaming/Quake3/), but still cannot join the single player game. I can load into Team Arena’s “SinglePlayer” mode fine by using the stable build, but this build does not like my mouse and drops frames whenever I move my mouse quickly. The test build works fine with my mouse, but Team Arena single player does not want to work with this build.

I’m running a Windows 8.1 setup with a GTX660/Intel HD 4400 (Former is being used for ioQuake 3) and have 8GB of RAM.

This is a known issue with ioquake3’s Team Arena qagame DLL/QVM: https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6030

Workarounds:

  1. Use the console to manually join team: \team red
  2. Remove missionpack\vm\qagame.qvm and make sure the console variable vm_game is 2 (which is its default).

Hey, the second workaround seems to work great on my system! Thanks for the information!
